Marcos intends to return wealth to PH, time for LP and Aquino to say good bye

The existence of the Liberal Party (LP) and Aquino clan is strongly rooted in the villain-hero dichotomy where they are the heroes and the Marcoses are the villains, however, when the Marcoses opened up to President Rodrigo Duterte that they are willing to return some of their wealth to the Philippines, it has threatened the very existence of the LP and Aquinos.

RJ Nieto of Thinking Pinoy shared his analysis on the Duterte-Marcos transactions on the return of the country’s wealth. Long have LP cohorts demanded the Marcos family to return “everything” to the Philippines even when the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) which was established during the mid-80s barely scratched the surface of the Marcos wealth.

What Duterte did instead was become accepting of whatever amount the Marcoses were willing to give back. In this way, the family would acquiesce and the Filipinos would have received something. Additionally, the Marcoses did intend to return a sum that would helpfully address an incoming major budget deficit.

Nieto asserts that Duterte is a political realist which manifests in how he is taking action over this recent announcement from a Marcos liaison. From choosing the right words to describe the negotiations to easing the transaction by welcoming the political implications of the act.

Surely, the Marcoses are expecting something in return, as Nieto pointed out. However, they are not as key players in the current field as critics think they are. Duterte still holds the reins, largely, and the Marcoses are bargaining their way into a better public narrative.

While Nieto acknowledges that those who have been through Martial Law are negligibly likely to change their opinion about the family, the recent Marcos stint might make leeway for a “recalibration” of history in a new post-Martial Law generation.
