Former Binibining Pilipinas cuts into ASEAN lane.
Former Miss Universe ’82 representative and Filipina actress Maria Isabel Lopez was reprimanded by the ASEAN Committee on Security, Peace and Order and Emergency Preparedness and Response for cutting traffic by driving into the ASEAN delegate’s lane during the weekend.
“As a public figure, Ms. Lopez must be mindful of the impact of her actions. We tirelessly remind the people that traffic rules are created to save lives and put an order in the management of traffic flow, especially now that we are hosting the ASEAN Summit."
CSPOEPR Chairperson and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) officer-in-charge Catalino Cuy worries about the possible risks that Lopez’s actions put to the ASEAN Summit’s delegates and how it disrupted traffic management at the time.
"We will not allow someone like her to simply put our plans to naught,” Cuy stated.
Cuy deemed Lopez’s actions to be "neither be condoned nor tolerated.” The chairperson called on the public imitate the actions done by Lopez for they may be filed with charges against them.
Lopez, on the other hand, posted it on her Instagram and Facebook accounts, her antic of moving the divider cones and driving on the lane designated for ASEAN delegates.
“MMDA thinks I’m an official ASEAN delegate. If you can’t beat em, join them,” said Lopez in her Facebook,with the hashtags #nosticker, #leadership, #belikemaria, #pasaway, and #selfpreservation.
But realizing her mistake, Lopez apologized for her actions in another Facebook post where she said, "Don't miss 24 Oras at 6:30PM tonight so you will see the whole picture on when, how and why I did it. Sorry to those who got hurt and affected."
According to the ASEAN Technical Working Group on Traffic Management Chairperson Emmanuel Miro, this incident shall undergo investigation if necessary, a collection of appropriate charges including the disregarding traffic signs traffic violation would be filed against Lopez, referring to her own Facebook post as evidence.
“The law must be applied to everyone, whether you are an ordinary Filipino or a public figure like Ms. Lopez,” Miro said.
