Children still inside as MMDA tows car

It was on December 19 when the MMDA towed a car, with 2 girls still inside.

The towed car belonged to journalist Bienvenido Oplas Jr., who was out of the car to buy some food when he came back to see his car being towed away, with his two daughters, 7 and 11 years old, still inside.

Apparently, Oplas was parked in a “No illegal parking” zone. It was something he immediately realized so he went on to negotiate with the MMDA officers.

He told them that perhaps they could issue a ticket for the violation instead, seeing that his daughters were very afraid. However, the officers refused.

Oplas tried to negotiate some more, saying that what if he could just take his daughters home, considering they did not deserve to be put in that stressful situation, to which the officers refused to as well. They said that he cannot take his daughters home because someone from the towing company must be at the wheel of the car.

It is said that the towing should not have been allowed to board the vehicle being towed if the driver is around - something that the Tiger towing company clearly violated.

Also a parking violation’s penalty is P500, towing for the first four kilometers is P1,500, and P200 for every succeeding kilometer.

Oplas’s car was towed from Makati to Marikina, garnering thousands for the company.

After the incident, Oplas of course reported the situation to higher MMDA officials who hurriedly corrected their staff.

In the end, Oplas was charged P6000 plus towing fee, all of which he will be spared of according to reports.
